Fifth Hour Inaugural Address Pages

What to Expect

The students were asked, as per the previous page, to research an Inaugural Address from any President. While researching their goal was to gain a better perspective of what the nation was experiencing at that time. For Instance, a student who chose Franklin D. Roosevelt's First Inaugural would learn that the nation he had inherited as President was just beginning to realize how bad things could possibly get as the Great Depression grew deeper and deeper. His address to the nation was one of hope and of perseverence when he said, "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself." This speech forces us to learn the circumstances surrounding it and allows us to draw inferences linking past to present. We might ask ourselves after researching past Inaugural Addresses, "What might we expect to hear January 20, 2009?"
