Introduction

The Transportation of the 1800's has changed a very dramatically now, than I'm sure that was thought before. The North and the South both had transportation problems and the main problem they were having was that they needed to get around on water. They need a fast ship or boat, but they had very few choices to chose from. The steam boat was one of the main choices of transportation but it wasn't very fast. There are also the wooden row boats and fairy boats, but they could not carry large loads of cargo. So, what are they going to do?

Before the 19th century

In the 18th century transportation was like very slow steamboats, hand rowed row boats, and other things that would take about one hour and a half.
Some changes have been made since the 1800`s like steamboats, I am positive that they still have steamboats but there are different things to because you can still find a steamboat somewhere like I don't know a place with more water than land and you might use steamboats for fun but really nothing else.

The North & South together

The United States was in need of change with transportation because they were in luck with a lot of land, but didn't have the population they needed to move goods around and get them from place to place very fast. So the unpopulated places were making it very hard for the transportation to go well especially before the railroads were made in place of road-ways and water ways that could only really go one way till there was highways and railroads. Robert didn't just help the North, he helped the South get upgraded too with a steamboat too and helped with the South's economy too.

The North

In 1807, Robert Fulton invented a steamboat named the Claremont that went from New York City to Albany. For a 150 mile trip it was done in only 32 hours and was against a current that was really strong at the time. The time that the steamboat took to travel was a much bigger advantage to travelers than using horseback that would take about 4x more time than going on the Claremont. The only problem was, was that the claremont was only on the waterways and could only go a certain way so it was hard to get to an exact place using a waterway type of transportation other than using roadway transportation. This new steamboat was great because it could do things without relying on animals, currents, nor wind for travel. Then in 1827 the very first railroad that was made for passengers and freight. It was called the Baltimore and Ohio railroad (B&O railroad). The B&O was made connect the Baltimore harbor to the Ohio river. The railway reached a total of 23 miles in three years which isn't a lot, but jumped to about 2,800 miles by 1840, and then grew to about 30,600 miles after the 1850's.

The South

transportation02.pngIn 1811 Robert Fulton decided to help the South a little bit because he knew that they both relied on each other for upgrades on a lot of things. What he did was he brought the Steamboat named New Orleans, Down the Mississippi which became a huge economic prospect also. The New Orleans brought prices such as transporting from New Orleans to St. Louis, for one ton of merchandise from $23 dollars down to $13 dollars which was huge with where they were at. And the steamboat (New Orleans) brought the amount of steamboats from 20-1200 between 1814 to 1834.

The Difference - North and South

The South had hardly any transportation and what they did have was things that weren't anywhere close to the transportation that the North had. As you can see, the North was a much more industrial part of the United States and was always looking for better ways to transport things from the South to the North as well as just from a city from the North to another.
